March 2010 Masters Round-Up

March 2010 was a very busy month for the Bluefins Masters, with the squad competing in four separate meets.

2010 Swim Wales Open Masters
Three swimmers travelled to Swansea to compete in this long course meet held at the Wales National Pool.

Neil Jackson had a clean sweep of the backstroke events, winning the 50m, 100m and 200m events in the 60-64 age group.

Catherine Shearn, competing in the 40-44 age group, won gold in the 200m Butterfly, and gained silvers in the 800m freestyle, 50m Butterfly and 100m Butterfly.

Mark Straw, in the 50-54 age group, won gold in the 100m Butterfly, silver in the 200m, 400m, 800m freestyle.

15th Bracknell Masters Meet
This meet was held on the same weekend of the Swansea meet, so our numbers were a little thinner this year. However, there were some more great performances.

Michelle Matson had another excellent meet, winning four events in the 30-34 age group (50m & 100m Freestyle, 200m Backstroke, 50m Butterfly) and silver in the 50m and 100m Backstroke events.

Amy Cantelo, also competing in the 30-34 age group, won silver in the 50m Butterfly, bronze in the 50m Breaststroke and 100m IM and gained 4th place in the 50m & 100m freestyle events.

Charles Parker, competing in the 65-69 age group, won silver in the 50m Backstroke and bronzes in the 50m Freestyle and 100m IM.

Hampshire Youth Championships
Michelle Matson was in action again this weekend, this time competing in the Hampshire County ASA County Swimming Championships. Michelle was competing in six events in the Youth Section (age 19 & Over), which was incredible given that in order to compete at the event she had to make the qualifying times intended for the fastest youth swimmers in the county.

Michelle rose to the occasion and had another great weekend’s swimming winning a silver medal in the 200m Freestyle. She also gained 4th places in the 100m & 200m IM, 5th in 100m Freestyle and 6th in 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle. Well done Michelle!

9th Royal Navy Masters Open Meet at Millfield School
This was a real team event with seventeen Bluefins Masters competing. In total, the team won 14 Gold Medals, 17 Silver Medals and 14 Bronze medals.

Bluefins finished in an excellent 5th place out of 43 teams in the visiting team competition, just one point adrift of Army Swim.

Dave Davenport set new meet records in the 55-59 age group in two individual events (200m & 400m Freestyle).

Michelle Matson set a meet record for the 100m IM in the 30-34 age group.

The Mens 200-239 relay team (Antony Scott, Spencer Turner, Simon Hindshaw and Dave Davenport) set two meet records: 200m Medley Relay and 200m Freestyle Relay.

Spencer Turner, in the 40-44 age group, won all four of his individual events.

James Scott, swimming in the youngest and most competitive age group, had two superb swims.

Michelle Matson (30-34) and Zoë Sadler (35-39) each collected an award for accumulating the most points in their respective age groups.

Congratulations to all 17 Bluefins team members who took part in the competition- Aaron Boyd, James Scott, Michelle Matson, Zoë Sadler, Catherine Shearn, Spencer Turner, Joanne Postins, Kate Robarts, Jean Hanna, Mark Straw, Simon Hindshaw, Antony Scott, Dave Davenport, Colin Godfrey, Neil Jackson, Brian Boyd and Frank Taylor. Afterwards, the team went for a celebratory meal – the only disappointment of the day was that there was no apple crumble left for the coach!

The Masters squad continues to go from strength to strength under Neil’s excellent coaching and leadership, and we look forward to continuing to build on this success over the coming year.
